Subject Information

Learning for Life and Work is not about teaching pupils what to think but how to think. The Learning for Life and Work classroom is a 'community of enquiry' where pupils are encouraged to explore their own attitudes towards real life issues and also to develop an appreciation of the needs and perspectives of others.

Early research shows that Learning for Life and Work is proving to be enjoyable and engaging for pupils. Learning for Life and Work aims to help pupils develop a deeper sense of identity and belonging in their communities as well as developing the skills necessary to become involved in contributing to society.

Teachers have also reacted positively to teaching Learning for Life and Work. They appreciate the importance of being able to help their pupils explore issues that are important to their lives in and beyond school.

All young people need to feel that they have a valuable contribution to make to society and the 'know how' and the skills to do so. Making this vision of Learning for Life and Work real is one of the most exciting challenges facing teachers, schools and the wider community today.
