Key Stage 4 – GCSE

(AQA Resistant Materials Technology)


What do I need to know, or be able to do, before taking this course?

Throughout Key Stage 3 you will have produced a range of projects in Technology and Design, including graphics, mechanisms, electronics and resistant materials.

If you particularly enjoy the creative side of Technology and Design and are keen to develop your practical skills working with wood, metal and plastics, hand tools, machines and CAD/CAM, then you now have the opportunity to follow our two-year GCSE course to specialise in Resistant Materials Technology.


GCSE RMT covers a wide range of activities based on designing and making products that are manufactured using materials such as wood, metal and plastics in many forms. As well as learning hand skills, you will use a range of industrials processes to shape and form materials into functioning products. Over the course of two years you will develop a whole range of creative designing and making skills, technical knowledge and understanding relating to RMT and invaluable transferable skills such as problem solving and time management.


Unit 1: Creative “Design and Make” Project.

This controlled assessment is undertaken in school during Year 11 and is worth 60% of the total mark.

Unit 2: Knowledge and understanding of Resistant Materials Technology.

This takes the form of a structured, two hour exam paper and is worth 40% of the total mark.



This GCSE is useful for a wide range of careers such as: Engineering, Manufacturing, Design work, Architecture. It is also a good combination with subjects that are Science based.

COSTS: A charge may be made for materials.
