A-Level Technology & Design (Edexcel Board) Product Design

Students wishing to study A-Level Technology & Design will need to have at least a grade C at GCSE in one of the following subjects:
Technology & Design
Resistant Materials or Graphics
(students who do not have either GCSE should discuss their decision with subject teacher)
The Product Design A-Level will follow the ‘Resistant Materials’ pathway. The Advanced Level Examination is in two parts:


●             Advanced Subsidiary  (AS) – 40% of total award in Year 13
●             Advanced (A2) – 60% of total award in year 14

What will I be Learning ?

AS Units


Unit 1: Portfolio of Creative Skills
Internal  Assessment
Internally  set and marked by your school/college and externally moderated by Edexcel
Number of marks: 90
You produce one portfolio that contains evidence of product investigation, product design and product manufacture. Photographic evidence must be supplied for the product(s) you have made
60% of AS course
30% of full GCE

Unit 2: Design and Technology in Practice
External Assessment
Time: 1 hour 30 minutes examination set and marked by Edexcel
Number of marks: 70
You complete a question and answer booklet, consisting of short answer and extended writing type questions

40% of AS course
20% of full GCE

A2 Units

Unit 3: Designing for the Future
External Assessment
Time: 2 hour examination set and marked by Edexcel
Number of marks: 70
You complete a question and answer booklet, consisting of short answer and extended writing type questions
40% of A2 course
20% of full GCE

Unit 4: Commercial Design
Internal  Assessment
Internally  set and marked by your school/college and externally moderated by Edexcel
Number of marks: 90
You design and make a product. This is evidenced in your design folder with photographic evidence of you making the product and of the final product itself.

60% of A2 course
30% of full GCE
